The generation that grew up with tamagotchis, video games, and the internet isn’t about to research kids and babies in books or – God forbid – the internet! They’re going to be turning to the Gravida, of course!

Notion Ink was spouting some complete nonsense last week about the Adam’s battery life. Check this out: they said that it would have 48 hours of battery standby juice, which is also good for 8 hours of HD video playback or 16 hours of WiFi-enabled browsing. I’m seriously doubting those ambitious numbers. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Adam couldn’t even do half of that.

It’s got a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Android OS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, HSDPA, and A-GPS. Ports include USB, HDMI, and a headphone jack. Storage comes by the way of a flash drive and memory card combo. It smells a bit like vaporware to me, but only time will tell. Then again, by June the market will be flooded with similar devices.

The Indian company is currently discussing plans to test the 3G capabilities of the Adam in the US and in India, since the 3G networks are compatible. They expect to deliver it in June 2010, with an expected price of 15,000 rupees (approx 1 USD).

Just load up greySox String Trio, choose a bit of classical music, and press “play”. The music loads in and plays based on the strokes of the virtual “bow” that is your iPhone or iPod Touch. String Trio uses the motion sensor in your iPhone to detect the angle and length of your strokes, and adjusts the playback of the music accordingly. You can either choose automatic accompaniment (hence the “trio” part of the name), or perform a solo without any backing instruments. The video below should give you a pretty good idea of how it works.

I don’t know about you, but that Beethoven demo track sort of sounded like the theme from Fawlty Towers to me. They really should add that one to the app and they’d sell a lot more copies. For now, you’ll have to settle for one of the over 20 included classical and folks songs bundled with the App. greySox is also offering in-app downloads of two additional 10-track collections, priced at 99 cents each.

The conversion process was quite impressive and the inside doesn’t look anything like a garbage truck anymore. OK, so it’s not really a garbage truck, it’s a UNICAT TerraCross all-terrain vehicle. It looks like a pretty swanky pad! A lot of storage and organization systems went into this creation, especially so his stuff doesn’t fly around while he’s driving around.

This is quite astounding. I’d never expect anyone to live in a truck like this. It’s kind of a sleeper RV, perfect for super-heroes and super-villains, able to go wherever you want. UNICAT does a bunch of custom trucks. I’m sure that you can find one that fits your fancy.

The idea is that to try and to live simpler by taking your home with you wherever you go. I also like the fact that they use all-terrain trucks, instead of a really expensive RV. I bet this thing would be zombie-proof too.  You can buy your own UNICAT truck if you want to try this for yourself.

Did I mention that this tiny thing cost .1 million dollars? This ‘bot can flap its wings 30 times per second, just like a real hummingbird. It’s supposed to save lives by searching for survivors in accident sites and other dangerous spots that are usually not accessible by humans.

The .1M cost is actually associated with all of the the robot’s development, so I guess that’s not as bad as it sounds. Japanese researchers at Chiba University near Tokyo want to create a sort of robot that will hover, just like this bird. It’s controlled by infrared sensors. The researchers mentioned that if they are able to fit a tiny camera on the robot, it could be used to “help rescue people trapped in destroyed buildings, search for criminals or even operate as a probe vehicle on Mars.”

That sounds pretty amazing to me. The robot weighs less than an ounce. For now, its flight movements are limited, but hovering is supposed to be possible in 2011, and they hope to put a miniature camera in by then too.

You’ll spend 1,000 (USD) on this device, which is more than quite a few supercars. It’s called the Cruden Hexatech simulator and it kind of reminds me of those Battletech simulators that were all of the rage years ago. I always wanted to play in them, but never did.

The Rambler is a very solid electrical outlet concept that completely eliminates the need for extension cords. The Rambler is just like a normal socket but pinch the outside to release it and hidden behind the plug is a 5 foot long spool of wire. The spring loaded spool retracts back with a simple pull. Designed by Meysam Movahedi, the idea is great, as long as you have the space within your wall to hold all that wire. It would be ideal for vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and anything else that only requires an extension cord for a brief period of time. I like this design concept- could be a winner.

Yum! This is not the cake you’re looking for- YES IT IS- your Jedi mind tricks won’t work on me. It’s a great looking cake in the form of a LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper. Crafted by Dawn Leckie of Auroracakes (of Moray, Scotland!), for Daniel’s 8th birthday, it has giant Lego bricks in front for a nice balanced look. If I was looking for a cake and happened to be near Elgin, I’d definitely be giving Dawn a call.

The problem with scooters like the Vespa is that you can only take one extra passenger with you. Art Lebedev’s (ru) design firm has come up with yet another unique take on an ordinary product. The Punctirus is a jewelry design that works as either a bracelet or a necklace. It looks like a tiny scissor cutting along the dotted line. When worn it looks…well it looks a little creepy to be honest, especially around the neck:

It’s unclear if this design will be sold or it’s just a one-off concept.

This is a major league mod. Some enterprising (get it, enterprising?!) guy has modded a remote controlled scale model of Star Trek’s famed USS Enterprise into a working submarine. The RC “aqua model” is still fully controllable and has the effect of floating in space just like the “real” USS Enterprise as the hypnotic video below shows:

Golf is super easy when you don’t have worry about getting the perfect swing anymore. The folks at Air Force Golf have created this shotgun-like golf ball launcher that uses an air compressor to launch your golf ball up to 300 yards. Technically this golf aid was designed to help the disabled who can’t swing a club play the game but it looks like it would work great for some redneck golfing too. No word yet on whether there’s a handgun for putting.

Sounds creepy? Yeah, this was made possible using rare earth upconverting nanophosphors that are capable of absorbing 980 nm laser light, where it is followed by emitting visible luminescence that will subsequently excite traditional solar cells to produce electricity. This might get a bit more technical than usual, but the boffins discovered that “under the irradiation of a 980-nm laser with a power of 1W, the visible up-converting luminescence of rare-earth nanophosphors can be efficiently absorbed by the dyes in 980LD-PVCs so that they exhibit a maximal output power of 0.47 mW.” Before it can be used on us humans, further testing must be conducted, and initial results have showed that even after being covered with 1 to 6 layers of pig intestines with a thickness of around 1mm per layer, 980LD-PVCs still managed to exert a maximal output power of between 0.28 and 0.02 mW, which is more than enough juice to power a whole host of biodevices.

Guess we might just have heart pacers that keep on going, and going, and going in the future, eh?

Asphaltfighters of Germany will certainly wow motorheads with their latest production motorcycle – just check out the raw numbers of the Stormbringer and tell me that this beast isn’t your next dream ride (on two wheels, at least). Packing in a 999cc engine, the Stormbringer is capable of ekeing out 220hp with another 60 ponies which will kick in whenever you surpass the 180kmh – sort of like nitro for a bike, albeit under controlled conditions. Capable of surpassing the 198mph mark, the Stormbringer will hit 62mph in a mere 2.9 seconds, making it much faster in pick up compared to supercars, while other achievable targets include 124mph in 6.5 seconds, and 186mph in 13.9 seconds. Each purchase will come standard with a HELD riding suit and kevlar/carbon X-Lite helmet, and you know you will get your money’s worth since the riding position and suspension have been tailored for the buyer – you. This means no two machines are alike (unless you’re identical twins), and not everyone who sits on your ride will find it as comfortable as they might think it would be. The Asphaltfighters Stormbringer boasts the full array of cutting edge technology including 10 stage traction control, heads up display, rear-view camera and programmable speed limiter among many others for a relatively reasonable price tag of EUR 57,500 – that is, if you’re an oil baron or fall under the Forbes list.

Judging by the specifications, one can more or less argue that this is the world’s most extreme production motorcycle for the moment. Needless to say, something this exclusive will be produced in limited quantities, where each purchase will see the suspension tuned to the buyer’s weight and the riding position. Made in Germany, it has the standard 165bhp Kawasaki ZX-10R as its base, where Warm-up will then rework everything to result in such a beast.

It does not surprise me that a Japanese researcher named Hiroshi Liu modeled his flying robot after the hummingbird. His robo-hummingbird, for lack of a better word, weighs up 2.6 grams and 10 centimeters long. Just to let you know, this is about the size of a non-robo-hummingbird.

Believe it or not, research into this robotic avian is at million, and counting. The end-goal of this project is to create a robo-hummingbird with a tiny camera. This will allow the robo-hummingbird to fly into tight corners for going to places that humans cannot reach.

For example, in situations where a mineshaft has collapsed, and there is only tiny openings for air. Just send in the robo-hummingbird and check on the status on survivors. Now, you could achieve the same effect by mounting a tiny camera on a small flying toy copter, but the toy chopper would not be as stable in its flight.

Personally, I can easily see this robo-hummingbird being used as some sort of spy camera. I’m not certain if adding a colorful hummingbird disguise would fool anyone, though.

True, augmented reality was not created last year, but it really flourished in 2009 with numerous ad campaigns. I first experienced it at CES 2009, and I called it the “Coolest Gadget ever”. I’m sure I’ll see it at CES 2010, and on many more applications throughout the next year.

Apparently, there is some tradition in Japan that uses end of the year greeting cards, and so Epson decided to liven it up with a dash of augmented reality. These greeting cards, also known as nengajo, allow the users face to be wrapped in the animal personna of the new year. For 2010, this is the year of the tiger. I have a video of it after the jump if you want to see it for yourself, but I don’t have it translated.

To make one of these cards, all a user needs is an Epson Colorio printer. Then he or she just holds it up to the webcam, and prepare for something very, very awesome.

Granted, I don’t send New Years Cards, but that is only because we don’t have this custom in the United States. However, most people send Christmas cards, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I see some homemade augmented reality Christmas cards next holiday season. Of course, it’s probably too early to start thinking about Christmas 2010.

That HDD Media Player sounds useful, doesn’t it? I just can’t help but think that these Hot Cat Gloves are just downright useless. Of course, I have no right to judge, because, according to Thanko, their Catgirl Earphones from last summer are their “No. 1 selling item”.

I suppose that a pair of cat paws that warm your hands was an obvious choice for Thanko’s winter catalog. All the user has to do is connect the gloves to a USB port, and the pink paw pads that you can see in the pic deliver warmth to your bare fingers. Yes, your fingers are exposed with these gloves, but that’s only so you can type with these feline fists.

Clearly, there must be some sort of crowd out there that digs dressing up as a kitty cat. I’m not certain that I want to know the reason. Didn’t CSI do an episode about this?

So here’s what we do know: the NES-style will be maintained. There will be new bosses, like Sheep Man (who does in fact look a little sheepy). There will be Mega Man (and Proto Man). And, for all the crybabies out there (read: regular people with thumbs still sore from Mega Man 9), there will be an Easy Mode.

What we don’t know is where and when the game will appear, though another timed exclusive for WiiWare seems like a safe guess, with an eventual release to other formats.

The miSoccer (9 USD) works just like any other iPod speaker dock, except it looks like a soccer ball (or for the majority of the globe – a football). The miSoccer dock is a self-contained 2.1 sound system, and has two full-range drivers for stereo sound, plus a 15-watt subwoofer inside the soccer ball. It plays and charges all iPod models with the dock connector. It doesn’t say that it’s compatible iPhones though, so I’m betting you’ll get that annoying GSM interference if you try one that’s not in airplane mode.

Sony asked a number of us bloggers to snap photos using the camera’s unique sweep panorama feature – then enter them into a competition. The winner will get to send 10 of these wonderful little digital cameras to the school of their choice. If I end up winning, I’d like to pledge mine to Carl Schurz High School, a diverse public institution which emphasizes math, creative arts, science and technology right here in my neighborhood in Chicago.

So back to the camera… the WX1 can shoot seamless horizontal or vertical panoramas with a simple sweeping motion of the camera. As the camera is moved from side-to-side or up-and-down, it snaps numerous photos in rapid succesion and automatically stitches them together into a panorama. As an added bonus, this pocket-size 10-megapixel camera can also capture 720p HD video.

The app’s clean interface and appropriately limited functionality makes it easy to use, but more importantly, it looks good enough to be your homepage, which I think is the only way TeuxDeux can actually help you get things done. Because let’s face it, it really doesn’t matter where or how you make a list of tasks. What matters is that you’re regularly confronted by it so that you actually remember what you’re supposed to do (and hopefully have enough self-discipline/guilt/need for money to accomplish your tasks). So if you’re going to use TeuxDeux, do yourself a favor – set it as your homepage and make your browser open it whenever you open a new tab. Otherwise sooner or later you’re either going to forget about it or you’re going to be too lazy to log-in and check it.

It’s hard to believe that this is Urbina’s first casemod, and I also find it hard to believe Urbina when he says that “The Desk’s function is to just get things done”, because if I had to work using The Desk I would be extremely distracted by the lights and the innards.

Okay so there was a human with them, but still. ZOOZBeat led with its loops and Shimon improvised and followed along, complete with head nodding. If you were wondering what ZOOZBeat and Shimon have in common, ZOOZbeat Founder and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Gil Weinberg is also the creator of Shimon. I’m just not sure if that was him in the video, but Dr. Weinberg will jam with Shimon live on December 16-19, at the SIGGRAPH ASIA conference in Yokohama, Japan. This is how far robots have come; imagine what we could be doing with them in the future!

The guys at Microvision have put together this demo of their PicoP display engine, strapped to a motion-sensing FPS gun controller – and it’s awesome! The system tracks your movements in real time and projects a heads-up display on a blank white wall to keep you immersed in the gameplay. The tiny mobile projector can crank out images up to 200-inches (assuming you’re in pitch darkness), and can automatically produce a distortion-free image on flat or curved surfaces. For purposes of this demo, the controller is wired up to play a game of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Not only is the sequel spread out across two discs, but the follow-up will also feature a sprawling voice cast packed with even bigger names than the first game, which sported work from the likes of Marina Sirtis and Lance Henriksen. Actors Seth Green and Keith David will be returning for the second game, and a bevy of new actors have been added to the voice cast, from Carrie-Anne Moss and Tricia Helfer to the underrated and fabulous Oscar nominee (and Emmy winner) Shohreh Aghdashloo and Martin Sheen. In case that’s not enough, fan favorites Adam Baldwin and Michael Dorn round out the cast. I sure hope January and February are low points in the movie release schedule next year, because Hollywood is gonna be hard-pressed to pull me away from this one.

At this point, I’m not sure what’s left for the planned third game. Nathan Fillion? That’d be worth waiting for.

The computer mouse always seems to be finding itself in new and odd shapes.  If just having a brightly decorated one isn’t quite enough of a change for you, these go for a whole different shape.  It’d be great for anyone that can never seem to get comfortable with a normal mouse.  This one goes for more of a ball shape and even comes in a handful of cheery colors for you to choose from.

That particular touchscreen is 18 feet x 4 feet, but the Ring Wall in Nurburg, Germany is 45 meters long and two meters high. It has 15 high definition projectors for up to 34.5 million pixels worth of display. Nice!

So, what can we put on this Ring Wall touchscreen? How about anything we want! Just think, I could probably fit all the icons for every iPhone app! I’ve included a video of the Ring Wall after the jump so you can see it for yourself.

Believe it or not, atop the giant screen is an even larger LED wall that is 400 square meters in its size. That’s pretty cool, too. I’m just not certain why Sensory Minds decided to call their colossus of a touchscreen the Ring Wall. After all, it wasn’t like they shaped their touchscreen into a ring. In fact, is it even possible to have a curved touchscreen?

If so, then I could easily see a circular touchscreen display all around me, where I could control the world. Well, I could control my world, at least.

This new IPTV/PMP has 2 GB of internal memory that is good for music (WMA, MP3M WAV, AAC, OGG formats), video (AVI, MPEG4, DIVX, XVID, RM/RMVB, DAT, WMV, 3GP & FLV formats), and photos (JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG formats). The user can also use the SD/MMC slot to upgrade to 16GB worth of memory.

This Kula will come with various channel packages that are customizable with the Basic, the Kid, and the Grand. The first two packages will give users 100 channels for free, and the Grand is a special service that offers 500 channels. The user can choose from all sorts of live streaming programs that are selectable by country, language, and topics like the News, Sports, and Finance.

The Kula is powered by a rechargeable battery and has a 4.3 inch screen. It will be on display at CES 2010, along with some of the company’s other products. According to Gary Bennett, the Sungale VP of Sales, “The Kula is the next big thing that will revolutionize the way people watch TV”.

That is a very big claim, Gary, because with mobile devices and internet video streaming channels, I believe that the TV-watching revolution has already begun.

This next step in augmented reality is a unique development from Toppan Printing Co Ltd for vending machines. It is being used in three Japanese supermarkets, and it requires the consumer to have a specific QR code in order to receive a free sample.

I’m sure that you have seen QR codes on other augmented reality apps such as the cover of Esquire’s December issue, for example. The customer can print out the Toppan QR codes from home, or can put it on a screen of their mobile device. From there, they can show it to the Toppan brand vending machine, and they will receive a free product sample. Find out after the jump what happens from there.

Yes, the augmented reality fun doesn’t stop there as the consumer can hold up the actual product to the augmented reality-fitted camera and get a really cool effect. I’m not certain what kind of effect is seen, but you might want to check out this new Coke Zero ad campaign to give you an idea of what’s up.

Toppan seems to be on to something good, all right. I suppose that it is too much to ask for this augmented reality to go worldwide.
